Rate of Occurrence, a new multi-media exhibition by Philadelphia-based artist duo Create in Situ, will open at the University City Science Center’s Esther Klein Gallery (EKG) on November 6 and run through December 5, 2014. Rate of Occurrence consists of two sculptural installations, Temporal Shift and Proceed, both of which investigate different ways that humans perceive and interact with their surroundings. An opening reception is scheduled Thursday, November 6th from 5:00-7:30pm at EKG, which is located at 3600 Market Street in Philadelphia.
Temporal Shift transforms environmental data into audible sound and visible movement. Sensors and microprocessors are attached to each side of the sculpture to collect ambient sound, light and temperature from the surrounding environment. Each piece of harvested data creates a different type of sine wave. These waves are layered, edited and converted into audio files, which are then amplified through speakers seated below parabolic mirrors filled with water, creating phenomena called cymatics. The ambient sensory information contained within a building that usually goes unnoticed is converted into a language of sound and light for the viewer to experience.
Proceed dissects the boundary between surveillance and sousveillance (or self-surveillance). Multiple surveillance cameras are installed in the gallery to entice and covertly capture multiple portraits of the viewer, as they watch themselves in real time on a video monitor. These portraits are then synthesized to form abstract digital portraits of the viewer – transforming their faces to the point of being unrecognizable. These portraits are then uploaded to the web, where people can access them according to the date and time they interacted with the installation.
Create In Situ, LLC was founded in 2009 by interdisciplinary artists Sarah Zimmer & Kim Brickley. Together they explore the dynamic layers of perceptual experience, place, and time. Their work examines the psychological, social, and emotional effects of place, transforming each site into an immersive, and sometimes interactive, experience. A diverse team of professional consultants and creative partners extend their vision. CIS is dedicated to expanding the role of new media, technology, and physical computing within both the public and gallery settings.
