Is Climate Change as Critical as the Economic Downturn?

Is climate change as critical as the economic downturn? Nobel Laureate Dr. John Byrne will share his thoughts at the Lunch for Hungry Minds program, September 22 at the University City Science Center’snew Quorum space.

Dr. Byrne shares the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize with former Vice President Al Gore and researchers of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Dr. Byrne’s presentation, New Policy for New Weather, will focus on the issues we face as climate change becomes as critical a policy issue as the economic downturn. Byrne will discuss what solutions for climate change will work and what will not -- and if it’s possible to collectively address environmental, social and economic challenges.

Byrne is Director of the Center for Energy and Environmental Policy (CEEP) and Distinguished Professor of Energy and Climate Policy at the University of Delaware. He has contributed to Working Group III of the IPCC since 1992. His recent books include: “Energy and Environment: The Policy Challenge”, which addresses the global warming debate; and “Transforming Power”, which explores the prospects for significant changes in the world energy system in order to reverse human-induced climate change.

The Lunch for Hungry Minds seminar will take place from 11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. at the Science Center’s new Quorum space at 3711 Market Street, Suite 800, Philadelphia. The program is free and lunch is provided. Space is limited and advanced registration is required. Online registration is available at http://sciencecenter.cal.basecampbusiness.com/node/43221

About the Science Center
The University City Science Center accelerates technology commercialization, regional economic development, and the market availability of life-enhancing scientific breakthroughs by bringing together innovations, scientists, entrepreneurs, funding, laboratory facilities, and business service. Established in 1963 and headquartered in Philadelphia, PA, the Science Center was the first, and remains the largest, urban research park in the United States. Graduate organizations and current residents of the University City Science Center’s Port business incubators have created more than 15,000 jobs that remain in the Greater Philadelphia region today and contribute more than $9 billion to the regional economy annually. Since 2006, Port companies have collectively raised over $80 million in private capital and over $12 million in government funding that directly supported product development.

The Port business incubator offers start-up companies more than just physical resources. It also surrounds emerging ventures with the other ingredients required to grow and be successful. The Port offers its residents access to free programming including Lunch for Hungry Minds scientific presentations and Smart Talk’s business building advice. The Science Center’s Scientific Advisory Committee connects Port companies with a vast array of clinical and technical expertise and facilities. Current committee members include the senior research administrators (or equivalent) from academic, healthcare and research institutions, as well as from leading local companies in the life sciences and other industry sectors.
