Memory Melody with Doug Hirlinger

Memory Melody is an interactive app that composes music after interaction with willing participants. The app, named Max, plays a series of short melodies, which the participant plays back on small electronic midi pads or by click colored squares on a computer screen. The melodies are long enough that participants may not replay them exactly the way Max played them. Max combines his versions and the participant's versions as material for a composition.

BIO
Doug Hirlinger is a percussionist, composer, and educator based in Philadelphia. He is an active performer on the drum set and has appeared throughout the United States and Europe with many musicians and ensembles of note including The Philadelphia Orchestra, Matt Mitchell, Ralph Bowen, Gene Perla, Luis Perdomo, and Joel Frahm. Doug is increasingly interested in intersections between technology, activism, improvisation, and sound/music. He recently completed an artist residency at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts resulting in a 10-piece suite exploring gentrification, inequality, and musical legacy in Philadelphia with collaborators Ursula Rucker, M’Balia Singley, Tim Motzer, and John Swana. Doug creates electronic music under the name Man From Nowhere as well as under his given name. Doug has been guest lecturer at universities such as The New School, Temple University, and Coe College in Iowa as well as a frequent teaching artist in Philadelphia, Reading, Harrisburg, and New Jersey public and private schools. Doug has been teaching music privately for over 20 years and is a self-taught programmer.
