Young, gifted, and likely to leave town

Give the Nutter administration credit for trying to keep young entrepreneurs in Philadelphia. Through the Philadelphia Industrial Development Corporation, $500,000 is being provided to the University City Science Center to help commercialize the results of early-stage scientific research. The city has also won a $1 million Bloomberg Philanthropies grant to encourage entrepreneurship that tackles social problems. Bloomberg funds are being given to the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School and the Good Company group to launch the Philadelphia Social Entrepreneurship Partnership. Instead of the city identifying problems and requesting bids from private enterprise, entrepreneurs will be asked to identify problems and pitch solutions.
