Machinato Causa Explores Digital Fab

The growth of digital fabrication has opened the door to a whole new generation of possibilities, many of which come to life at the intersection of art, design, science and technology. The always-imaginative folks at Breadboard, the non-profit hybird partner of high-tech workshop and prototyping center NextFabStudio, have unleashed three of Greater Philadelphia's most interesting artists on its digital fabrication equipment to produce new works for an exhibit that kicks off this Friday (Nov. 19).

Machinato Cause is the result of a six-week artist-in-residency organized by Breadboard, NextFab and The Center for Emerging Visual Artists (CFEVA). Laureen Griffin, a CFEVA Career Development Program (CDP) Fellow and past artist-in-residence at Airspace, is among the artists creating for Machinato. She is known, most recently, for work that combines portraiture with historical American material culture to "rewrite the history of a gender-centric society."

Also participating collaboratively is the team of Marisha Simons and Peter Hanley, whose work 'Bloom' was one of the darlings of the Extra-Dimensional Printmaking Invitation exhibition at the Nexus Gallery this past spring. Simons is a past CFEVA-CDP fellow.

The artists' work, made using 3D printers, laser engravers and computer-operated milling machines, will be unveiled at an opening reception from 5-8 p.m. on Friday at the Esther Klein Gallery (3600 Market St.) at the University City Science Center. The exhibit runs through Jan. 2, 2011. Read more.
