Stephen Zarrilli
Immediate Past President and Chief Executive Officer, University City Science CenterMr. Zarrilli has been a director of the Science Center since 2019, and served as President and Chief Executive Officer of the Science Center from 2018 to 2020, when he elected to resign in order to focus full-time on his rehabilitation from a stroke.
From 2012 to 2018, he served as the President and Chief Executive Officer of Safeguard Scientifics, Inc. (NYSE:SFE), a private equity and venture capital firm founded in 1953 and based in Wayne, Pennsylvania, that specializes in expansion financings, growth capital, management buyouts, recapitalizations, industry consolidations, corporate spinouts, growth stage, and early stage financings. Mr. Zarrilli joined Safeguard as its Chief Financial Officer in 2006.
Over the course of a 30-year career, he has served as CEO and CFO of both publicly traded and privately held, venture-backed companies. Having been directly involved with the launch of two businesses, he has deep domain expertise as an entrepreneur, board member and financier. Mr. Zarrilli serves as a board member for Virtus Investment Partners (NASDAQ:VRTS) and Globus Medical Inc. (NYSE:GMED). In addition, he is Chair, Board of Trustees at LaSalle University, and a former Chair of the Board of Directors of Ben Franklin Technology Partners of Southeastern Pennsylvania.
Mr. Zarrilli holds a B.S. in accounting from LaSalle University. He is a former Certified Public Accountant, and is a frequent lecturer on corporate governance, financial management, organizational and capital development matters. He also completed the Advanced Management Program at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.
