Welcome to the Flying Slippers Blog!

By Deanna Crusco

Welcome to the Flying Slippers blog! The Science Center is taking a foray into the world of blogging, and we’re excited to keep you up-to-date on what we’re up to, our plans for the future and introduce you to the people that inspire us.

First off, let’s address the elephant in the room – why exactly did we choose the name Flying Slippers? Buckminster Fuller, the visionary and inventor behind the geodesic dome, once reflected upon the success of his inventions, saying “My objective was humanity’s comprehensive success in the universe. I could have ended up with a pair of flying slippers.” Fuller spent the later years of his life as a World Fellow in Residence at the Science Center, and his insight has had a lasting impact on our outlook.

Our community of innovators and entrepreneurs regularly experiment, fail and repeat, all the while working towards that one breakthrough that could change everything. Since our community embodies Fuller’s ideology of “I could have ended up with a pair of flying slippers,” we thought the name was a perfect fit.

We’re excited to share this blog with you, and help you get to know the students, artists, entrepreneurs and innovators who inspire us every day. You can expect to learn more about the hands-on work of our FirstHand students, the technologies being developed in our commercialization programs, the artists who’ve displayed work at our Esther Klein Gallery, and even the employees who make the Science Center tick.

You’ll hear from us on the blog on the first and third Thursday of every month, but we encourage you to check out our events and visit our website any time -- or even work out of Quorum, our entrepreneurs clubhouse! We’ve been busy this summer and look forward to blogging full steam ahead this fall. #FlyingSlippersBlog

“I did not set out to design a house that hung from a pole, or to manufacture a new type of automobile, invent a new system of map projection, develop geodesic domes or Energetic Geometry. I started with the universe—as an organization of regenerative principles frequently manifest as energy systems of which all our experiences, and possible experiences, are only local instances. My objective was humanity’s comprehensive success in the universe. I could have ended up with a pair of flying slippers.”
